Kids need new hobbies every day. To keep them entertained, you need to engage them in creative activities that keep them busy in a productive manner, help build their cognitive thinking, improve social & problem-solving skills and develop imagination, motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Handmade products give children a sense of independence & accomplishment as they get to create them on their own.
1. Handprint Dinosaur Cards – Dinosaurs might be one of the scariest carnivores to walk the face of the earth, but kids love them as they watch the movies and play with the dinosaur stuff toys. To create handprint dinosaur cards shaped like the diplodocuses & apatosaurus, you need handmade paper in different colours, googly eyes stickers and pompoms, glue, scissors and markers.
– Fold a colourful paper in half & trace the child’s hand on one of the sides.
– Cut out the handprint carefully & cut another shape for the dinosaur’s head.
– Paste it at the back of the card’s top side.
– Paste the pom poms on the body & Stick two googly eyes on the head. Make the dinosaur’s mouth using a black marker. That’s it!
2. Origami Paper Cats – Origami has been an age-old craft and is introduced in early days to children. For this creative activity, you need colourful organic paper, white yarn, googly eye stickers and basics – scissors and glue. Just fold the papers and stick googly eyes & yarn in place of eyes & whiskers for little kitties and your kids can make the cats play with them anytime they want.
3. Paper Mask – For a birthday party, playdates or a dance performance, your kids will love creating these creative masks. These fun and easy masks add a lot of creative thinking into the process. All you need is handmade paper in different colours, feathers, glitters and sequin stones, some glue and scissors and that’s it.
4. Paper Lantern – Lights are the main focus of many festivities. From Christmas to Diwali, lanterns play a huge role in accentuating the joy with lights and beautiful designs. Along with creating these pretty handmade paper lanterns, you can educate your children about the importance of these festivals.
Steps
– Paste four ice cream sticks in a square shape, around the edges. This will be the sides of the lantern.
-Cut 4 square sheets that are traceable according to the ice cream stick square you have created.
-Draw beautiful mandala patterns on each of them. Keep it similar to each other.
-Paste the handmade paper or tracing paper with mandala on the square boxes.
-Join the four square boxes together with glue and place it over an LED tea light.
5. Paper Flowers – Flowers of any kind, even paper, express a lot of love and gratitude towards the receiver. Your kids can make these flowers for their teachers, parents and even friends. Ask your child to draw and trace hearts on different colours of craft paper sheets and cut them out. You can provide assistance if they’re too young to cut out the intricate shapes.
Once this is done, all you need are straws or pipe cleaners & some beads, and voila – your paper flowers are ready, make a bouquet or present it as individuals.
With these ideas, you can motivate your kids to not only create but also understand how important the process of making handmade products is as well. They will learn to appreciate the efforts when people do something for them and also teach the value of handicrafts & its originality more than the label-made products.
