How different are Fingerprint Scanners and Iris Scanners?

Posted on 15/06/202315/06/2023 By Lucas Noah No Comments on How different are Fingerprint Scanners and Iris Scanners?

Iris and fingerprint scanning are popular biometric forms of identification. So what are the differences between these two popular biometric identification methods? In this article, you’ll find the differences, including what they are and how each functions. Read on to discover more.

What Are Fingerprint Scanners?

Fingerprint scanners are biometrics systems used in security industries, agencies and organisations, as well as in devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops and desktops. Individuals have friction ridges that form unique patterns, popularly known as fingerprints.

These uniquely detailed patterns are durable throughout a person’s life and are difficult to change. As a result, they’ve become a perfect way of identification. Fingerprint scanners are available in four main types, which you can view here, including thermal, ultrasonic, capacitance, and optical.

The main function of each of these scanners is to capture an individual’s fingerprints and find a perfect match for them in the linked database. So how does a fingerprint scanner work?

How Do Fingerprint Scanners Work?

A finger scanner has an identification system that captures specific characteristics in the line patterns on a finger surface. The islands, ridge endings and bifurcations that make these line patterns are stored in an image form.

A fingerprint scanner captures all these unique fingerprint features and then compares them to the ones stored in its database to confirm a person’s identity using an image of the fingerprints.

All types of fingerprint scanners rely on the fact that every individual’s fingerprints form unique patterns. And that no two individuals share the same patterns, making fingerprints a unique identification technique. If an individual’s fingerprints are stored in a database, a quick fingerprint recognition check that a system runs confirms identity.

What Are Iris Scanners?

Iris scanners are simply digital cameras that use near-infrared and visible light to take an iris image. After that, they identify the inner and outer iris boundaries and execute reflections, eyelashes and eyelids.

These iris scanner devices then use mathematical or carefully worked-out pattern recognition on these photos to identify a person. How does iris scanning work?

How Do Iris Scanners Work?

Iris scanners work by capturing a high-contrast image of an individual’s iris using near-infrared and visible light. The photo is then matched to an existing image database for verification and authentication. Iris recognition is highly accurate since no two individuals have identical arises, whether twins, brothers, or sisters.

Both iris and fingerprint scanners have their benefits and drawbacks. The main difference lies in the convenience and accuracy of each identification option. If you value convenience over anything else, a fingerprint scanner should be a perfect option. On the other hand, if accuracy is your priority, an iris scanner device should be your choice.
